How to Calculate WPM: The Formula Behind the Scenes
Not all typing tests are created equal. Some count every keystroke, while others only count full words. At TypeQuick, we use the global professional standard. Here is exactly how we calculate your stats.
The WPM Formula
The standard definition of a "word" in typing is 5 characters (including spaces and punctuation). This prevents people from getting a high score just by typing short words like "it" or "the".
**Formula:** (Chars / 5) / (Time in Seconds / 60)
Example:
If you type 300 characters in 60 seconds:
(300 / 5) = 60 words
60 words / 1 minute = 60 WPM
Accuracy Calculation
Accuracy is calculated based on "Net WPM" vs "Gross WPM".
**Accuracy %:** (Correct Keystrokes / Total Keystrokes) * 100
Why the "5-Character Rule" Matters
Without this rule, a person typing a technical manual (long words) would look much slower than someone typing a children's book (short words), even if they are hitting keys at the same speed. The 5-character rule levels the playing field.
What is KPH?
In some data entry jobs, they use KPH (Keystrokes Per Hour).
To convert WPM to KPH: **WPM * 5 * 60**.
So, 60 WPM = 18,000 KPH.
